Our Sunrise Champagne Breakfast hot air balloon flights are like nothing you’ve ever experienced. Labelled as the ‘ultimate bucket list item’, Hot Air Ballooning in itself is something that every person should experience at least once, although it can be said that once is never enough as you’ll be clamoring for more once it’s all over.

As the name suggests, the flight ticket itself offers a fully inclusive flight, champagne upon landing and full breakfast experience. The excursion lasts for approximately four hours, with around one-hour flight time. Cameras and not only allowed, but fully encouraged as some of your most incredible shots ever taken will more than likely come from your NOVA Hot Air Balloon flight experience.

Rising smoothly and silently towards the clouds, the only noise the occasional burst of the burners, fly in a hot air balloon to travel where the wind takes you to wonder at the sights so far below. Make memories to last a lifetime on your hot air balloon experience, which you will want to tell people about again and again. And once your flight is over and you sip Champagne after landing, you will find yourself wanting to do it all over again.

01

Arrival Check In

Upon arrival to the designated launch site, you will have the opportunity to indulge in hot coffee and some traditional South African rusks all while watching the crew prepare your Hot Air Balloon for flight. A sign in sheet will be provided where you will check in and be presented with a boarding pass.

02

Allocation & Pilot Meeting

After check in the on-site manager will assign you to your Hot Air Balloon as there could be multiple balloons scheduled to fly from the same location. You will also be introduced to your pilot who will then happily brief you on the exact plan for the day.

03

Briefing & Boarding

At this point your Pilot will assemble the rest of your fellow guests and conduct a full safety briefing. It is important that you and your loved ones pay full attention to your pilot as the information given is imperative to everyone’s safety. Once briefing is concluded basket boarding with assistance from the ground crew will begin.

04

Ascension

Once everyone is safely boarded and comfortable, the pilot will fire up the burners to initiate lift and carefully execute a slow rate of ascension. This is usually a very exciting time for guests as the true marvel of flight in a Hot Air Balloon starts kicking in. It is an incredibly serene experience where one is always amazed how silent everything is, only broken by conversation or the firing of the burners. Nostalgically, no other form of flight offers anything similar.

05

Flight

The pilot will steadily allow the balloon to climb to the height that was pre planned for flight. This can vary, depending on the day and the weather but it is not uncommon for the Hot Air Balloon to settle at around 5000 feet. Views from here are extraordinary and depending on visibility you should easily be able to see as far 3 kilometres in range. Again, cameras are highly recommended, just make sure you hold onto them!

06

Descent & Landing Briefing

Once the pilot has picked a suitable landing area, he will initiate a slow descent back down to earth. During this time he will brief everyone on the exact landing procedure which should be adhered to by everyone on board.

07

Landing

Flight in a Hot Air Balloon is a very serene experience while in the air, but it is an adventure activity in the great outdoors and sometimes on landing the basket can drag along before coming to rest. This is how balloons have been landing for over 200 years and is perfectly normal. The balloon and basket are designed for your comfort and safety throughout the flight. During landing you will be in the safe, seated landing position within the basket as instructed by your pilot. The landing is an exciting part of the experience and in many cases, people say it is their favourite part of the flight.

08

Champagne Celebration

Once the ground crew has assisted everyone in disembarking the basket, your pilot will in triumphant celebration of your incredible experience open a bottle of champagne and toast with you on this remarkable day!

09

Breakfast

As the ground crew proceed to pack up the balloon and basket a vehicle will be prepared to take you to your breakfast destination. Sometimes, depending on the day’s arrangements the breakfast table will be set right where you landed, allowing you to take in the splendour of the incredible Garden Route or Klein Karoo scenery around you. The pilot himself will always join in on this.

10

Departure

At this point you are welcome to depart at your leisure, but not before we present you with an official NOVA Hot Air Balloons named certificate as proof of your glorious exploits of the day.

The hot air balloon flight itself lasts approximately an hour, depending on weather conditions and suitability of landing sites. Please allow approximately four hours for the full experience.

Flights take place from a few launch sites in the Garden Route and Klein Karoo area. Please see our locations section for full details.

Flights are scheduled around sunrise, but allowance is made depending on weather conditions and launch sites.

Hot Air ballooning is an outdoor adventure so we recommend that you dress in warm, comfortable layers as well as a cap or other hat to protect against the warmth from the burners. As you will have to climb into the basket it is advisable to wear comfortable long trousers. Denim or cotton Jackets are preferable. Please bear in mind as Hot Air Ballooning is a physical activity your clothes may get a little dirty by the end of the experience. Sensible shoes or trainers are essential, no designer wear, flip-flops or high heels please.

Hot air ballooning is an extremely safe activity, which is highly regulated in South Africa with strict safety guidelines. We are licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority and all of our hot air ballooning pilots are fully qualified. We always use the latest equipment that the market has to offer.

We recommend that you bring a camera, binoculars or camcorder as the balloon makes an excellent platform for photography.

The safe performance of all Aircraft, including balloons are restricted by weight, altitude and temperature. Therefore, in order to calculate the safe performance of the balloon, we require the accurate weight of each and every passenger. Weight restrictions may be imposed. Children must be aged seven or over and at least 1.4m tall, with children under the age of 16 accompanied by a responsible adult.

Even though a Hot Air Balloon flight is a very tranquil experience while in the air, it is an adventure activity in the great outdoors and sometimes on landing the basket can drag along before coming to rest. This is how balloons have been landing for over 200 years and is perfectly normal. The balloon and basket are designed for your comfort and safety throughout the flight. During landing you will be in the safe, seated landing position within the basket as instructed by your pilot.
